How to reduce your carbon footprint
A practical, evidence-based playbook, plus the verified actions on VeriLeaf that let you track each reduction on-chain.
What is a carbon footprint?
Your carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by your activities, usually measured in kilograms of CO₂ equivalent (kgCO₂e) per year. The global average is around 4 tonnes per person; in high-income countries it often exceeds 10 tonnes. Bringing it toward 2 tonnes by 2050 is what a 1.5°C pathway looks like.
The four highest-leverage areas
Transport
Swap short car trips for walking, cycling, or transit. One car-free day a week can cut ~10% of a typical footprint.
Food
Shift a few meals per week toward plant-forward options. Reducing beef and dairy is the single highest-leverage food change.
Home energy
Switch to a renewable tariff, seal drafts, and lower heating by 1–2°C. Small settings compound across a year.
Consumption
Buy less, buy secondhand, and keep items longer. Every product avoided is embodied carbon avoided.
Track it, don't just estimate it
Estimates drift. VeriLeaf turns each reduction into a verified action with proof and an on-chain credential, so your footprint story is auditable, by you, employers, or climate programs.
